In my talk, we will delve into the world of artificial intelligence (AI) decision-making, examining its profound influence on our lives, and the risks it poses when imbued with unchecked biases. As AI systems are increasingly entrusted with critical decisions, from creditworthiness assessments to employment screenings, it's paramount that these systems are fair, transparent, and accountable. Yet, bias and discrimination have emerged as significant challenges, chiefly because AI systems tend to reflect and amplify the biases in their training data. These biases can inadvertently lead to unfair outcomes, exacerbating existing inequalities. Furthermore, I will discuss potential solutions, regulatory measures, and practices that can be instituted to mitigate these biases. The goal of this presentation is not only to expose the dark side of AI decision-making but also to inspire and guide the development of more equitable and accountable AI systems.

Initiatives were born out of a need to give contributors a framework to organize their work on specific goals for Drupal core. We've been widely successful with some of them, while major things happened outside of initiatives too. We'll discuss recent progress on key initiatives, look at where the model worked and I will share my thoughts on what may be the future of initiatives.

An avid open source enthusiast and contributor. A Full Stack Community Organizer working with and on the open source project itself at Acquia. A regular Drupal event speaker and organizer and does communication and social media for various initiatives.

He used to be the Drupal 8 multilingual initiative lead and the former release manager of Drupal 6.

You can also find him passionate about singing, music and amateur acting, especially when these are all combined, however he have little time for that alongside his two adorable kids and the private school he is co-leading.

One of the key strengths of Drupal is its flourishing ecosystem for contributed modules. Best of all, you can jump in and add yoour own module! All you really need is a good idea, though of course some programming knowledge, understanding of Drupal coding standards, and a few other technical things would help. This talk will focus less on how to write code or what code you should write, and more on the process of creating a module, submitting it on Drupal.org, and getting it adopted by the community. We'll touch on such topics as:

Looking for similar modules that already exist
Getting help from the community
Submitting your module
Sandbox or full project?
Getting the word out

You'll hear about the firsthand experiences in developing Smart Date, which went from an idea to one of the top 500 most popular modules on drupal.org in less than two years.

Martin Anderson-Clutz

Martin started his Drupal journey in 2005, with version 4.6. Since then, he has demonstrated his passion for the community in his frequent participation at Drupal user groups, local Drupalcamps, and Drupalcons, often as a speaker. He appears on the Talking Drupal podcast as a guest and host and most recently as host of the "Module of the Week" segment, and has blogs published on OpenSource.com and a handful of other sites. In his current role as a Senior Solutions Engineer at Acquia, he is able to evangelize Drupal to a wide variety or organizations, from local nonprofits to multinational corporations. He also maintains a number of contrib modules, including Smart Date, Search Overrides, and a number of others.

Abstract: Open source is not just about code, it's also about community. In this session, I will share my personal story of how I discovered the world of open source and Drupal, and how I went from being an introvert to founding my voice in the global community and even landing my first job. I will also talk about how the Drupal community inspires me to contribute and give back, and how I mentor others to join the Drupal movement. We will discuss how easy it is to get involved in open-source communities, all you have to do is show up and be yourself.

Topics: In this session, I will talk about:
- How contributing back to the community helped me, an introvert, to open up and find myself.
- How I learned to communicate and collaborate, not only with my fellow contributors but also with the larger global community.
- How the Drupal community motivates me to be part of something bigger than myself, and how giving back to the community can be a joyful and rewarding experience
- How I got involved in multiple communities, including Drupal, ACM, and Meta Developer Circles through code and non-code contributions, and how I got scholarships to attend various events like Grace Hopper Celebration India and DrupalCon Europe 2021

Being a developer is hard work. Not necessarily because what we do requires super-human abilities, but because we're consistently confronted with the unknown and only one question can freeze us in our tracks, sometimes stopping entire careers ; what if I'm not good enough ?

Everyone feels or has felt at some point in their lifetime as a developer this question, this unnerving feeling of dread and that helplessness that comes with it.
What if I'm not good enough ? What if I'm a fraud ? A fake ? There are so many great developers our there who can do things I'm not even capable of dreaming up.

What do I do about it ?
That's what this talk will touch on in hopes of sending you home with the right mindset to become the developper you wish to be.
