Abstract: Open source is not just about code, it's also about community. In this session, I will share my personal story of how I discovered the world of open source and Drupal, and how I went from being an introvert to founding my voice in the global community and even landing my first job. I will also talk about how the Drupal community inspires me to contribute and give back, and how I mentor others to join the Drupal movement. We will discuss how easy it is to get involved in open-source communities, all you have to do is show up and be yourself.

- How contributing back to the community helped me, an introvert, to open up and find myself.
- How I learned to communicate and collaborate, not only with my fellow contributors but also with the larger global community.
- How the Drupal community motivates me to be part of something bigger than myself, and how giving back to the community can be a joyful and rewarding experience
- How I got involved in multiple communities, including Drupal, ACM, and Meta Developer Circles through code and non-code contributions, and how I got scholarships to attend various events like Grace Hopper Celebration India and DrupalCon Europe 2021

Being a developer is hard work. Not necessarily because what we do requires super-human abilities, but because we're consistently confronted with the unknown and only one question can freeze us in our tracks, sometimes stopping entire careers ; what if I'm not good enough ?

Everyone feels or has felt at some point in their lifetime as a developer this question, this unnerving feeling of dread and that helplessness that comes with it.
What if I'm not good enough ? What if I'm a fraud ? A fake ? There are so many great developers our there who can do things I'm not even capable of dreaming up.

What do I do about it ?
That's what this talk will touch on in hopes of sending you home with the right mindset to become the developper you wish to be.

Improve your teams' peer code review process, your code maintainability, and your Drupal contributions. Learn from a Drupal core release manager—with over ten years of Drupal core experience—how to give an efficient and effective peer code review.

Peer code reviews are essential, improving maintainability, increasing productivity, and reducing costs. They can also reduce the rate of defects (bugs) introduced into a codebase by as much as 80-90 percent. Most importantly, they build a shared understanding of the application within a team and are an opportunity for developers to mentor each other.

Drupal core's peer code review process has two phases:
1. An initial peer code review cycle with one or more other contributors
2. A final stage of code review by a Drupal core committer (one of the few like xjm who can accept changes into Drupal core's production codebase).

As a result, the core committers are exposed to all the peer review (good and not-so-good) throughout the Drupal core issue queue. This makes committers ideal mentors and subject matter experts on both best practices and pitfalls to avoid.

In this session, you will also discover research and psychological principles on when code review is effective and when it is not. You will learn how structuring your change sets for the reviewer can improve the whole team's code and maintainability. Finally, you will learn about automation and tooling that can help reviewers focus on what's most important.
